WildSafeBC Modified Program Initiatives Launch in West Kelowna

The bears are out of hibernation and WildSafeBC is taking steps to educate West Kelowna communities and residents on the risks and safety precautions involved.

The hibernation period for bears is officially over and the natural residents of the Okanagan valley are venturing out of their sleeping quarters. Fortunately, WildSafeBC is on top of the emergence.
WildSafeBC is the provincial leader in preventing conflict with wildlife through collaboration, education and community solutions, and is delivered by the BC Conservation Foundation in communities across BC.
The WildSafeBC Okanagan Westside Coordinator is Meg Bjordal serving the residents of West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation, Peachland and the greater Central Okanagan West Electoral Area.
Normally WildSafeBC would be reaching out to communities in order to educate them about being ‘bear aware’ and how to deal with any localised bear incursions. With the global pandemic still in full swing, things will be done slightly differently this year.
“We will continue to provide local wildlife activity news and tips as the season progresses on our local Facebook page. We look forward to hearing from you and with your help, we can reduce conflict with wildlife and keep our community safe,” says Bjordal.
Starting in April and running through until November, Bjordal will be involved in a number of program initiatives that have been altered to accommodate social distancing and health concerns within the community. These initiatives will include door-to-door information delivery campaigns and garbage tagging.
The highly popular WildSafe Ranger Program aimed at school-age children will be delivered through interactive webinars in order to increase awareness and safety for children.
While bears are an important part of our local ecosystem, it’s important to know the risks and to education everyone, both children and adults, on what to do if a bear is sighted in a West Kelowna community. A development like Tallus Ridge in the Shannon Lake area, thanks to being located in a natural wildlife corridor, is perceptible to sightings of the occasional deer, bear, and other animals.
