Gone are the days when kids birthday parties are as simple as home-baked chocolate cake and snacks, blown up balloon and tacky party hats and games. Trends have shifted in birthday parties massively with more and more Singaporean parents opting for elaborate and often expensive parties. Experts in child development and psychology explain however that planning a memorable birthday party is not necessarily a waste of time and money.
Some would say spending too much on children’s birthday parties create peer pressure between other kids attending the grand celebration resulting to more pressure for parents to host an equally elaborate celebration. This can pose issues with moms and dads who are not financially capable to do so.
However, more studies are showing that celebrating a kid’s birthday, even as early as their 1st year, could bring about a number of benefits to both the parents and child.
Executive Priscilla Loke, who celebrated her son’s birthday party says, “We decided to have a party for two reasons – to celebrate the fact that our son was wonderfully and fearfully made, as mentioned in the Bible, and to thank God, who we see as the creator of all things.”
Another Executive, Flora Chew, who spent $7,000 on her child’s birthday said, “For me, it’s very meaningful to celebrate the first year of being a mother to my child as well as their first birthday, so it’s kind of my party as much as hers.”
While it is true that children under the age of three often do not remember their birthday parties, celebrating birthday parties for parents especially during the earlier years is as much beneficial to parents. The event is a great time to commemorate their milestone as being a parent as well as walking down memory lane.
According to a research by Jacqueline Woolley, Ph. D, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Children’s Research Lab, and her team from University of Texas, Austin, 83% of the kids involved in the study indicated confusion about what a birthday party meant. Most of the kids thought by celebrating a birthday party, they get to age a year older. Which also meant that not celebrating a birthday resulted in them getting stuck on the same age.
This is one reason stated by the psychologist on why it is best to have a party celebration for kids. Noted though that they will eventually learn that birthday parties do not actually make them age.
Birthday parties will allow children to feel extra special through the attention they get from their parents, other adults, and kids like them. This will help give them affirmations of love which is important for a child’s healthy development.
A research by Duke University Medical School found out that babies with affectionate parents grow to be happier, have better academic experience, and show fewer psychological and behavioral problems. As they grew older, they found out these individuals have better long-lasting relationship with their parents. This is why making them feel loved as young as their age is very critical because this has a long term effect on a child.
Most parents who celebrate their children’s birthday with grand parties, usually give the statement of these kind of events being an opportunity for them to plan their kid’s birthday according to their preference. Besides, they will grow old and may prefer to hang out with their friends in the future.
Making a big deal out of a child’s birthday and celebrating it as grand as parents want is starting to become a trend and is slowly being accepted by the society despite the comments of it being unnecessary. As society changes– with new technology and lifestyles coming out here and there– celebrating a big birthday party for children is achievable especially with the help of birthday event planners.
